Ice Wolves split season-opening weekend
SUNY Niagara club hockey returned to action with a pair of contests Friday and Saturday.
The Thunderwolves defeated Mercyhurst, 9-4, Friday at Hyde Park Ice Pavilion at Niagara Falls. SUNY Niagara then took its first road trip of the season and lost to SUNY Fredonia, 5-3.
SUNY Niagara (1-1) continues its season at 7:30 p.m. Saturday versus St. John Fisher at Hyde Park Ice Pavilion.
SUNY Niagara 9, Mercyhurst 4
In its first home contest of the season, SUNY Niagara came storming out of the gate and built a 4-1 lead after the first period. The "Ice Wolves" finished with eight different goal scorers, including two goals from freshman forward Connor Weiskerger. Tristan Wills scored his first collegiate goal in the victory and Jason Cerrillo, Mike Naccarato, Jake Benton, Josh Wanat, D.J. Burgio and Eddie Lynch scored one each.
Quinn Walton and Dylan Denning recorded three assists each. Cerrillo had two assists and Lynch and Weiskerger had one each.
SUNY Fredonia 5, SUNY Niagara 3
Lynch, Walton and Weiskerger scored one goal each. Cerrillo led all Thunderwolf skaters with two assists and Lynch added one.
