T’Wolves win fourth straight, Marshall climbs to seventh in all-time scoring in win over Jamestown CC

SUNY Niagara extended its win streak to four games for a second time this season with an 82-69 win over Jamestown CC Saturday in Sanborn. The Thunderwolves also moved to 4-0 in WNYAC play with the last full week of the regular season ahead. 

SUNY Niagara held a 37-33 halftime lead and shot 46.9% (15-of-32) from the field through the first 20 minutes of play. The Jayhawks kept the game within single digits and held the Thunderwolves’ lead to 66-60 with 5 minutes, 5 seconds remaining. A lay-up from sophomore Chioke Marshall helped the Thunderwolves close the game on a 16-9 run.

The Thunderwolves’ leading scorer, Marshall scored a game-high 32 points on 12-of-25 of shooting and went 2-of-9 from beyond the arc. Marshall also recorded six rebounds and one block and went a perfect 6-of-6 at the free-throw line. 

Jacob Humphrey scored 14 points behind a 7-of-17 shooting performance and had a career-high of nine rebounds. Humphrey also had four assists and two steals in the win. 

Jaedon Hutchinson had 12 points and six rebounds. He also recorded his 10th game with at least two made 3-pointers this season.

Ateny Kuol had seven points and three rebounds. Bryce Wejuli had six points and two rebounds.

Jack Kempf had five points and five rebounds in 24 minutes off the bench. D’Andre Gibbs, Mustafa Eskick and Abu Dukuray scored two points apiece.

SUNY Niagara shot 33-of-66 (50%) from the field, went 4-of-19 (21.1%) from the 3-point line and 12-of-15 (80%) at the free-throw line. The Thunderwolves scored 54 points in the paint, had nine assists and seven steals. 

SUNY Niagara is 14-8 (4-0 WNYAC) this season and has won nine of its last 13 contests since Dec. 3 and have won four of its last seven since the calendar year.

  • SUNY Niagara has now won 27 of the last 28 outings (4-0 in postseason) against Jamestown CC since the 2016-17 season. The Thunderwolves have now won the previous 15 meetings since they clinched the NJCAA Region III championship in a 99-57 win on April 3, 2021.

 

  • SUNY Niagara is now 8-1 in contests decided by 10 points or more and 6-7 in single-digit contests. The Thunderwolves are also 6-2 when shooting at least 50%, including in each of their last three wins.

 

  • With a 32-point outing, Marshall recorded his seventh game with at least 30 points (12th of career) and his 18th game in double-digit scoring in his sophomore campaign (46th of career). Marshall is fourth among all NJCAA Division II players with 24.9 points per game. 

 

  • In 52 career games, Marshall has now scored 1,080 career points (20.8 per game). After entering the Jamestown CC game with 1,048 points, Marshall passed Jeremiah Wilkes (1,056 from 1995-97) and Donel Cathcart (1,068 from 2016-18) and is now seventh all-time in SUNY Niagara men’s basketball scoring. 

 

  • Marshall is also one of seven SUNY Niagara players with at least 100 made 3-pointers in his career over the last 10 seasons (since 2016-17) with 103. Marshall needs 14 to pass former teammate Jalen Duff (116 from 2023-25) for sixth on this list. 2018 graduate Donel Cathcart holds the record in these 10 seasons with 144.

  • After scoring a career-high 33 points in a 101-96 win over Monroe CC in overtime Wednesday, Humphrey posted a career-high of nine rebounds and his four assists were two shy of his personal best of six in an 85-61 win versus Mohawk Valley CC on Dec. 17. Humphrey recorded his 12th double-digit scoring game of the season and his sixth in his last eight outings.

 

  • Hutchinson is now three rebounds away from recording his team-leading 150th of the season after his six boards against Jamestown CC Saturday. The Brooklyn, NY native has posted at least five rebounds in 17 games this season and garnered his 100th of the season during SUNY Niagara’s 78-67 win at Erie CC on Jan. 24. Hutchinson is averaging a team-high 6.7 rebounds plus 9.6 points per game this season and is the only Thunderwolf to start all 22 games.

 

  • Kuol’s seven points were his most since he recorded nine against both Allegany College of Maryland (89-83 win on Nov. 9) and CCBC Catonsville (80-76 loss on Nov. 15).

 

  • Kempf recorded a new career-high with three blocks in the win against the Jayhawks Saturday after he had two against both Beaver County CC (121-65 win on Nov. 22) and Monroe CC (101-96 overtime win on Feb. 4). Kempf also posted his 10th game with at least five rebounds and is averaging 4.5 points and 4.4 rebounds per game in 22 appearances.

 

  • With the nine assists, SUNY Niagara is 3-3 when posting less than 10 assists in a game, with two victories against Jamestown CC. The Thunderwolves are 12-4 when they post at least 10 and 5-2 with 15 or more assists.

 

  • SUNY Niagara is now 4-3 when it converts fewer than 15 free-throws in a game. The Thunderwolves’ season-high remains 31 on 46 attempts in a 98-94 win versus Garrett College on Nov. 8.
