Thunderwolves split with Herkimer CC in Region III doubleheader Sunday, have won three of last four
In its first action in five days, SUNY Niagara continued its campaign and split with Herkimer College in NJCAA Region III play Sunday in Syracuse. The Thunderwolves lost to the Generals in seven innings in Game One, 7-6, but bounced back with a 15-1 five-inning victory in Game Two.
The 7-6 win in Game One was SUNY Niagara’s second in games decided by one run or less this season. The 15 runs on 12 hits in Game Two marked a new season-high for the Thunderwolves and the most runs in a single game since an 18-10 victory versus Corning Community College on May 6, 2025.
Since returning from its season-opening nine-game slate at the Clermont Games in Florida, SUNY Niagara has won three of its last four contests. Including the forfeit win over Daytona State Christian University on March 19, SUNY Niagara is now 4-9 overall and 3-1 in NJCAA Region III action.
SUNY Niagara continues its season with its home-opening doubleheader versus SUNY Adirondack at 1 p.m. Saturday. The game’s location is still to be determined.
Game One: Herkimer College 7, SUNY Niagara 6, F/7
The Generals scored the first run of the game and held a 1-0 lead after three innings of play. The Thunderwolves bounced back and responded with four runs in the top of the fourth for a 4-1 lead.
Herkimer then scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth and cut the deficit to 4-3. SUNY Niagara then added two more runs to its cause and held a 6-3 lead through four-and-a-half innings, its largest lead of the game.
The Generals, however, scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth and tied the game up at 6-6. The Thunderwolves were then held scoreless in the top of the sixth and seventh before the host Generals scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh.
Freshman Emmilie Sypherd recorded her second multi-hit game in as many games (third of season) and went 2-for-3 at the plate with a run batted in. Sophomore Lauren Kisloski drove in a run and scored a run.
Miranda Shingleton went 2-for-3 and scored two runs. Grace Schindler, Caitlyn Hanley and Quinn Manth tallied a hit apiece and Molly Syposs crossed home plate once.
Caitlyn Hanley recorded her sixth start of the season for the Thunderwolves in the loss. The right-hander allowed two earned runs on 10 hits, struck out four and walked three in seven innings of work (112 pitches).
Game Two: SUNY Niagara 15, Herkimer College 1, F/5
The Thunderwolves scored the game’s first run in the bottom of the first. This led to the blue-and-gold recording three runs in the second and six runs in the third for a 10-0 lead.
Herkimer scored its lone run in the top of the fourth and cut the deficit to 9-1. But SUNY Niagara continued its hit parade in the bottom of the frame and scored five more runs before starter Marissa Shingleton completed the game on the mound.
Marissa recorded her second win in as many starts in her performance against the Generals. On only 44 pitches, Marissa allowed one run on five hits and struck out two, and also delivered a run and scored three times.
Sister Miranda led at the plate to complete the doubleheader as she went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate and tied for the team-high of four runs batted in. The freshman also scored another three and recorded a season-high three stolen bases.
Quinn Manth went 2-for-3 at the plate, drove in four runs, scored twice, and recorded her team-leading 18th stolen base of the season. Manth’s 18 stolen bases are good for fourth in NJCAA Division III, while Miranda Shingleton is tied for 10th with her 12.
Grace Schindler went 2-for-4 and drove in two runs. Mia Herman went a perfect 2-for-2, drove in a run, and scored three runs.
Molly Syposs and Jordan Shaffer also recorded one hit each and scored twice.
