SUNY Niagara picks up road win versus Jamestown CC in WNYAC opener

Behind four players in double-digit scoring, SUNY Niagara returned to the win column with an 85-61 finish at Jamestown CC on Wednesday. This was the Thunderwolves’ first of four WNYAC contests this season and marked their fifth win in their last seven outings.

SUNY Niagara held a 15-9 lead at the end of the first quarter and outscored the Jayhawks 27-14 in the second stanza for a 42-23 halftime lead. The Thunderwolves closed the first half on a 13-4 run in the last 3 minutes, 12 seconds. Freshman Azriel Hall drilled three of her game-high five 3-pointers in that stretch, including a make with 0:07 remaining for the 42-23 halftime lead.

Hall scored a game-high 27 points, shot 10-of-16 from the field, went a new career-high 5-of-7 from beyond the arc, had six rebounds, four assists, and three steals. The Lockport native recorded her 20th consecutive game in double-digit scoring and is ranked 24th among all NJCAA Division II players with her team-high 18.6 points per game.

Isabella Karabetsos finished with 16 points, her eighth consecutive game in double-digit scoring since a 12-point outing versus Schoolcraft College on Dec. 14. The sophomore also had a game-high seven assists plus five rebounds and three steals. 

Atarah Walker hit double-digit scoring for a fourth time in her last seven games (third consecutive) with 11 points plus a team-high nine rebounds, just one away from her 13th career double-double. Walker also had two assists.

Anna Astre finished with 11 points on 5-of-11 from the field and had two steals. Ava Bull rounded out the starting lineup with a stat-line of five points and five rebounds.

Alana Rivers and Adriana Kennedy scored five points each to lead SUNY Niagara’s bench scoring. Both also had three rebounds and two assists each.

Shania Beylo had three points and three rebounds and Allison Milleville added two points. 

SUNY Niagara shot 35-of-77 (45.5%) from the field, went 10-of-33 (30.3%) from the 3-point line and went 5-of-12 from the free-throw line (41.7%). The Thunderwolves also recorded 21 assists and 10 steals in the win.

SUNY Niagara is now 12-8 and 1-0 in WNYAC play this season, with seven victories in its last 11 contests since a 90-30 win over Villa Maria College on Nov. 23 in Sanborn. The Thunderwolves recorded their 10th win of the season — the 13th time in the last 14 seasons (since 2012-13) — in an 84-56 win at Lakeland CC on Jan. 12. 

 

NOTES:

 

  • SUNY Niagara is now 26-3 against Jamestown CC over the last 10 seasons (since 2016-17). The Thunderwolves have also won 13 consecutive meetings since the 2021-22 campaign. 

 

  • Along with extending her streak of double-digit scoring to 20 games, Hall recorded her 100th rebound of the season at the 9:17 mark of the third quarter after needing only four to hit the milestone. Hall has recorded 373 points (team-high 18.6) and 102 rebounds (5.1) in 28.7 minutes per contest.

 

  • Karabetsos recorded her 300th career assist on Hall’s lay-up at the 8:54 mark of the first quarter (6-2 SUNY Niagara.) She entered Wednesday’s game one shy of the milestone. 

 

  • Karabetsos recorded at least five assists in a contest for the 13th time this season (33rd in career). This was also the 12th time in her sophomore campaign (28th overall) when she reached double-digit scoring. The guard from Brampton, Ontario has recorded 556 points and 306 assists in 52 career games.

 

  • Now with 115, Karabetsos is one of 11 players in NJCAA Division II with at least 100 assists this season and is tied with Delta College’s Damaya Hartwick for sixth overall. Pima CC’s Melicia Nelson leads with 143. SUNY Niagara is 9-4 this season and 28-5 in her career when Karabetsos recorded at least five assists in a game.

 

  • Walker finished in double-digit scoring for the eighth time this season (20th career) in the win versus the Jayhawks and recorded her 400th career point on a lay-up at the 7:51 mark of the first quarter (8-5 SUNY Niagara). In 48 games as a Thunderwolf, Walker has recorded 409 points (8.5 per game) and 423 rebounds (8.8 per game) and posted her 12th career double-double (14 points, 14 rebounds) against Montgomery College on Jan. 18. This season, Walker is 67th in rebounds per game among all NJCAA Division II players with her team-high 8.8 average. 

 

  • This was Astre’s 11th double-digit scoring game and the ninth in her last 11 appearances. Astre is averaging 11.3 points and 4.8 rebounds per contest and shooting 42.6% from the field in 20.6 minutes per game.

 

  • Bull recorded her 17th game this season with at least five rebounds and the 44th time in her career. The Burlington, Ontario native now has 411 career rebounds and 412 career points in 52 career games. This season, Bull is averaging 7.9 points and 7.5 rebounds in 22.3 minutes per contest. 

 

  • With the 21 assists in the win against the Jayhawks, SUNY Niagara is now 6-0 this season when it records at least 20 assists in a game. This was the Thunderwolves’ first 20-assist game since they had 20 in a 100-57 win versus Corning CC on Dec. 3. SUNY Niagara is 10-1 when it tallies at least 15 in a contest and 2-7 when it doesn’t. 

 

  • At 45.5%, SUNY Niagara has shot at least 40% in a game 12 times this season and a sixth time in its last seven games. The 10 converted 3-pointers marked just the third time this season when the Thunderwolves reached double-digits (14 versus Lackawanna College on Nov. 1 and 13 versus WVU Potomac State College on Nov. 7).

 

SUNY Niagara continues its season and begins a three-game homestand when it hosts Monroe CC at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 4 in Sanborn. This is the second of four WNYAC games on the Thunderwolves’ slate and their first home game since an 88-61 win versus Herkimer CC on Jan. 6.
