Hall, Walker score 19 apiece, T’Wolves beat Monroe CC on “Blackout Night”
In its first game in a week, SUNY Niagara recorded a second straight win in WNYAC play with a 90-69 finish over Monroe CC Wednesday in Sanborn. This was the Thunderwolves’ second of four WNYAC contests this season and their sixth win in their last eight outings.
SUNY Niagara built a 48-23 lead at halftime, including a 27-11 advantage in the first quarter. The Thunderwolves led by as many as 33 points at the 7-minute, 24-second mark of the third quarter and outscored the Tribunes 56-36 in the paint.
Freshman Azriel Hall scored 19 points, shot 8-of-13 from the field and had four rebounds, two assists and two steals. The Lockport native recorded her 21st consecutive game in double-digit scoring and is ranked 24th among all NJCAA Division II players with her team-high 18.7 points per game.
Sophomore and Niagara Falls native Atarah Walker recorded her fifth double-double of the season and the 13th of her career with her stat-line of 19 points (7-of-11 shooting) and a game-high 15 rebounds. Walker has now finished in double-digit scoring for a fourth consecutive game and the fifth time in her last eight outings (nine times overall). In the last two seasons, the Thunderwolves are now 11-2 when Walker has a double-double in a game.
Anna Astre scored 16 points and went 6-of-8 from the field for her 12th double-digit scoring game of the season and her 10th in her last 12 outings. The freshman guard from The Bronx, NY also added six rebounds in the win.
Isabella Karabetsos scored nine points on 3-of-9 shooting and added a game-high six assists. The sophomore also contributed two rebounds and one steal.
Ava Bull added nine points and 10 rebounds in the win. The sophomore recorded six of her rebounds on the offensive end and had three steals.
Allison Milleville scored nine of SUNY Niagara’s 18 points off the bench, her highest scoring output since she scored 10 in a 100-57 win versus Corning CC on Dec. 3. A former two-time Section VI champion at Starpoint High School, Milleville also added four steals and two rebounds in 18 minutes off the bench.
Alana Rivers had five points and three rebounds. Shania Beylo had two points, four assists and a team-high five steals in 22 minutes off the bench. Adriana Kennedy had two points and one rebound.
SUNY Niagara shot 34-of-66 (51.5%) from the field, went 4-of-12 (33.3%) from the 3-point line and converted 18 of 26 attempts at the free-throw line (69.2%). The Thunderwolves also recorded 14 assists and 15 steals.
SUNY Niagara is now 13-8 and 2-0 in WNYAC play this season and has won eight of its last 12 contests since a 90-30 win over Villa Maria College on Nov. 23 in Sanborn. The Thunderwolves have posted 10-win campaigns in 13 of the last 14 seasons (since 2012-13).
NOTES:
- This was the eighth time SUNY Niagara scored at least 90 points in a contest this season. The Thunderwolves are 7-1 when they hit the mark. The lone loss came in a 106-101 double overtime defeat against Beaver County CC on Nov. 22.
- Wednesday marked the 40th win with sophomores Isabella Karabetsos, Atarah Walker and Ava Bull on SUNY Niagara’s active roster (40-13 overall). Last season, SUNY Niagara finished 27-5, won a seventh consecutive NJCAA Region III Div. II championship and appeared at the NJCAA national tournament for the fifth time in program history.
- Along with extending her streak of double-digit scoring to 21 games, Hall converted at least 10 shots in a game for the 10th time this season. The most shots Hall has made in a game this season is 11 on 14 attempts in an 88-61 win versus Herkimer College on Jan. 6. Hall has recorded 392 points (team-high 18.7) and 106 rebounds (5.0) in 28.6 minutes per contest.
- Karabetsos’ streak of consecutive games with double-digit points did not extend to a ninth game. The eight games in a row — Schoolcraft College on Dec. 14 to Jamestown CC on Jan. 28 — was the longest streak of her career. The previous high was three consecutive games on three separate occasions (Nov. 26 - Dec. 7, 2024, Feb. 2 - 8, 2025 and Feb. 22 - March 8, 2025).
- Karabetsos did, however, record at least five assists in a contest for the 14th time this season (34th in her career). The sophomore guard from Brampton, Ontario has recorded 565 points and 315 assists in 53 career games. Karabetsos joins 2023 graduate Aichata Ballo as the only SUNY Niagara women’s basketball players with at least 500 career points and 300 assists in a career. Ballo recorded 809 points and 389 assists in 81 career games from 2020-2023.
- Now with 121, Karabetsos is one of 17 players in NJCAA Division II with at least 100 assists this season and is tied with Harcum College’s Tayla Barros for ninth overall. Pima CC’s Melicia Nelson leads with 159. SUNY Niagara is 10-4 this season and 29-5 over the last two seasons when Karabetsos recorded at least five assists in a game.
- In 49 career games, Walker has recorded 428 points (8.7 per game) and 438 rebounds (8.9 per game) and 13 career double-doubles. This season, Walker is 35th in rebounds per game among all NJCAA Division II players with her team-high 9.1 per game.
- Bull recorded 10 rebounds in a game for the seventh time this season and the 15th time in her career. Bull’s season-high and career-high was 16 in SUNY Niagara’s 81-62 loss versus Mid Michigan College on Dec. 13. The Burlington, Ontario native now has 421 points and 421 rebounds in 53 career games. This season, Bull is averaging 7.5 points and 7.9 rebounds in 25.1 minutes per contest.
- SUNY Niagara is now 3-7 when it records fewer than 15 assists in a contest. The Thunderwolves are 10-1 when they have at least 15 and 6-0 when they post at least 20.
- At 51.5%, this was SUNY Niagara’s highest shooting percentage performance since it went 52.7% (39-of-74) in a 100-65 win versus WVU Potomac State College on Nov. 7. SUNY Niagara has shot at least 40% in a game 13 times this season and a sixth time in its last eight games.
SUNY Niagara continues its final three-game homestand of the regular season when it hosts Jamestown CC at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in Sanborn. The Thunderwolves won the first meeting with the Jayhawks, 85-61, on Jan. 28 in Jamestown to kick off their WNYAC slate.
