Bull records ninth career double-double, Thunderwolves fall to Monroe CC in nail-biting regular-season finale

SUNY Niagara saw its four-game winning streak end with a 65-62 loss at Monroe CC Saturday in Rochester. This was the fourth and final game in WNYAC play for the Thunderwolves during the regular season (3-1) and the first meeting with Monroe since a 90-69 win on Feb. 4 in Sanborn.
The Thunderwolves held a 21-14 lead at the end of the first quarter. But the Tribunes came roaring back and outscored their opponent 51-41 over the final three quarters and were led by Zakieya Williams’ game-high 36 points.
Freshman Azriel Hall led SUNY Niagara offensively with a team-high 18 points on 5-of-14 shooting and 8-of-10 from the free-throw line. She also had four rebounds and two assists.
Hall scored a career-high 40 points — the program’s first 40-point game in 29 years — in a 100-59 win versus Lakeland CC on Feb. 15, the Thunderwolves’ final home game of the regular season. The Lockport resident is currently tied for 12th among all NJCAA Division II players with her team-high 20 points per game.
Isabella Karabetsos scored 10 points on 3-of-11 shooting and went 3-of-8 at the free-throw line. The sophomore also had three rebounds and team-highs in assists (4) and steals (4).
Ava Bull posted her fourth double-double of the season (ninth career) with 10 points and 11 rebounds plus two assists and a steal. SUNY Niagara is now 8-1 when Bull records a double-double in her two-year career.
Fellow sophomore Atarah Walker had eight points and seven rebounds. Anna Astre finished with five points, four rebounds and two steals to round out the starting five.
Alana Rivers scored eight of the Thunderwolves’ 11 bench points in 15 minutes of action and provided for rebounds. Allison Milleville had three points and seven rebounds in 24 minutes and Shania Beylo had one rebound and one assist.
SUNY Niagara shot 21-of-65 (32.3%) from the field, went 2-of-17 (11.8%) from the 3-point line and converted 18 of 31 attempts at the free-throw line (58.1%). The Thunderwolves also recorded nine assists and 13 steals.
With a bye into the NJCAA Region III championship at 1 p.m. March 1 in Sanborn, SUNY Niagara ended the regular season with a 15-9 record and went 7-3 since the start of the calendar year. The Thunderwolves have posted 10-win campaigns in 13 of the last 14 seasons (since 2012-13).
NOTES:
- Along with recording her ninth career double-double, Bull now has 16 career outings with at least 10 rebounds in a contest (eight in each season). After 56 career games, Bull has posted 440 points and 444 rebounds with SUNY Niagara. The sophomore and Burlington, Ontario native is averaging 7.3 points and 7.8 rebounds in 25.2 minutes per contest this season.

- In 24 career games, Hall has recorded 480 points (team-high 20.0) and 123 rebounds (5.2) in 29.3 minutes per contest. Hall joins 2020 graduate Paige Emborsky as the only SUNY Niagara women’s basketball players to score at least 400 points in their first season over the last 10 seasons (since 2016-17). Emborsky, who later finished at NCAA Division I Abilene University and NCAA Division II Daemen University, scored 530 points as a freshman in 2018-19 and finished with 1,011 points in her two-year Thunderwolves career, which ranks third all-time behind 2023 graduate Alaina Forbes (1,032) and 1998 graduate Michelle Milleville (1,029).
- Since a 12-point outing in a 75-47 loss versus Schoolcraft College on Dec. 14, Karabetsos has reached double-digit scoring in 11 of SUNY Niagara’s last 12 games (32 in career). Karabetsos scored a season-high 20 points in a 98-63 win versus Jamestown CC on Feb. 7.
- Now with 145 assists, Karabetsos is tied for ninth among all NJCAA Division II players, good for a team-high 6.0 per game. Waubonsee CC’s Niallie Evans and Pima CC’s Melicia Nelson leads the category with 200 assists. Karabetsos finished tied for 11th last season with 191 assists (5.8 per game).
- A sophomore guard from Brampton, Ontario, Karabetsos has recorded 595 points and 339 assists in 56 career games. Karabetsos joins 2023 graduate Aichata Ballo as the only SUNY Niagara women’s basketball players with at least 500 career points and 300 assists in a career over the last 10 seasons (since 2016-17). Ballo recorded 809 points and 389 assists in 81 career games from 2020-2023.
- In 52 career games, Walker has now recorded 459 points and 465 rebounds with the Thunderwolves. The former Niagara Falls High School star is tied for 53rd in rebounds per game among all NJCAA Division II players (team-high 9.3).
- SUNY Niagara is now 2-4 in games decided by 10 points or less this season. This was the Thunderwolves’ first game decided within this margin since a 69-62 loss at CCBC Essex on Jan. 24.
SUNY Niagara returns to action when it plays for the NJCAA Region III championship at 1 p.m. March 1 in Sanborn. The Thunderwolves, who are looking for their eighth consecutive regional title, will face the winner of the Monroe CC - Jamestown CC semifinal, which is scheduled for 1 p.m. Feb. 28 in Sanborn.
