Niagara County Community College split a pair of road games at Western New York Athletic Conference rival Monroe Community College on Thursday afternoon. The Thunderwolves, ranked No. 3 in the latest NJCAA Div. III poll, moved to 15-5 overall. The Tribunes, a perennial NJCAA Div. II contender, are now 7-6. NCCC returns to the diamond at 2 p.m. March 31 for a doubleheader at rival Erie Community College.
Monroe CC 9, Niagara CCC 5
The Thunderwolves scored all five of their runs in the opening frame. Freshman Vincent Stutz was 2-for-3 with an RBI double, classmate Howie Stuckey clubbed a two-run double and sophomore Chris Tani finished 1-for-2 with an RBI. On the mound, freshman Troy Leibert struck out six and allowed just one earned run in 4.2 innings of relief.
Niagara CCC 6, Monroe CC 4
N-Trip scored three runs - via a hit-by-pitch, walk and wild pitch - in the top of the seventh inning to win it. Sophomore Vincent Cenname had two RBIs and Tani finished with two hits and two runs scored for NCCC. Sophomore Kyle Menaker tossed 3.2 innings of one-hit relief to get the win.
