Thunderwolves finish fourth at World Series

A historic season came to a close for SUNY Niagara on the biggest stage of its season.

The Thunderwolves placed fourth at the NJCAA Division III World Series held at Falcon Park in Auburn, NY. Entering the double-elimination tournament as the No. 1 seed, SUNY Niagara was eliminated with an 8-6 11-inning loss against Dallas College-Richland on Tuesday and would have needed two wins to advance to Wednesday's championship final.

SUNY Niagara finished with a 51-2 record and set a new program mark for most wins in a single season. 

 

Game One: Century College 4, SUNY Niagara 1 

May 24, 2025

The Thunderwolves trailed 2-0 going into the eighth inning before Gavyn Boyle recorded a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to cut the deficit in half. Century College then added two more runs in the ninth for the victory. Boyle finished the contest 2-of-4 at the plate with the RBI and run scored. Dalton Harper, Christopher Finocchario and Braeden Dyck recorded a hit apiece. 

On the mound, Aidan Paul went six innings for the Thunderwolves and allowed two runs on three hits and struck out four while allowing six walks on 112 pitches (62 strikes). Mark Holm then threw 2.1 innings in relief and gave up two runs (one earned) on four hits along with a strikeout and two walks. Nolan Terwilliger recorded the final two outs with a pair of strikeouts in the ninth. 

 

Game Two: SUNY Niagara 9, Northern Essex 0, Final 7 Innings

The Thunderwolves scored five runs in the fifth inning and added three more in the sixth to support the complete game shutout victory for Matt Barr.

The freshman allowed only four hits, struck out 11 batters and walked four on 114 pitches (71 strikes). 

Offensively, Braden Hill drove in a team-high three RBI, including a sacrifice fly in the second and a two-run single in the fifth. Mike Schaefer went 2-of-3 at the plate with a RBI and two runs. Chris Finocchario recorded a solo home run in the sixth inning, while Gavyn Boyle and Michael Cole drove in one run each. Dalton Harper scored two runs and Cooper Rossano added a run. 

 

Game Three: SUNY Niagara 16, Surry Community College 14

The Thunderwolves turned a five-run deficit (10-5) in the third and a three-run deficit (14-11) in the ninth for a victory against the Knights.

A RBI single from Cooper Rossano, a run on a passed ball from Gavyn Boyle, a sacrifice fly from Mike Schaefer and a two-run single from Braden Hill helped the Thunderwolves score five runs in the ninth while Nolan Terwilliger secured the win by allowing only two hits to complete his 1.1 innings in relief.

Rossano went 3-of-6 at the plate and drove in a team-high five runs and scored an additional three. Schaefer went 2-of-3 with 3 RBI and two runs. Hill finished the contest 2-of-5 at the plate with 2 RBI. Nigel Sebastianelli, Braden Dyck and Michael Cole and Christopher Finocchario all recorded one RBI each. 

In relief, Keegan Bazinet went five innings for the Thunderwolves, allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits, plus two walks and one strikeout.

 

 

Game Four: Dallas College Richmond 8, SUNY Niagara 6 Final/11 Innings

 

The Thunderwolves trailed 6-0 through five innings before scoring six runs through the ninth, including two each in the seventh and eighth, to tie the contest at 6-6. 

Christopher Finocchario provided a two-run double in the bottom of the seventh, bringing home Michael Cole and Dalton Harper to cut the deficit to 6-3. Nigel Sebastianelli delivered a home run and Weston Thompson had a RBI single in the eighth to make the contest a one-run deficit. Braeden Dyck then recorded his second RBI of the game with a sacrifice fly in the ninth, bringing Cooper Rossano home to score.

Dyck and Finocchario finished with a team-high 2 RBI apiece. Sebastianelli recorded a team-high 3-of-6 at the plate. 

In the loss, Liam Hadfield threw five innings in the start and struck out a team-high five batters and gave up two runs on three hits. Nolan Feidt went 4.1 innings out of the bull-pen and allowed five runs (two earned) on four walks and one strikeout.
